Abstract

The article "Il mondo del lavoro e la scuola nell'era digitale: un dialogo possibile?" investigates the complex relationship between the italian educational system and the evolving demands of the labor market in the context of digital transformation. It critically analyzes how technological advancements are reshaping the nature of work and increasing the skills required to participate in it, focusing particularly on artificial intelligence, automation, digitalization, and the emergence of new professional sectors.

While the world of work is undergoing a rapid and unpredictable evolution, the school system remains slow to adapt, hindered by structural rigidity, outdated curricula, and a lack of digital competence among educators. Italian educational reforms over the past two decades have attempted to bridge the gap between school and work through measures like work-based learning and more market-aligned programs. However, these reforms often fail to keep up with the dynamic nature of the tech-driven economy, especially in fields like data science, machine learning, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, where skills and tools evolve constantly.

The article highlights the urgent need to rethink education from its foundations, starting from primary and secondary school grade, where students should be introduced to computational thinking, responsible digital behavior, and basic programming logic. It also addresses the ethical implications of digital technology and AI, emphasizing the importance of educating students not only in how to use these tools, but also in how to critically understand and evaluate their societal impact.

International approaches to AI governance are compared, with a focus on the European Union's structured and human-centered regulation (AI Act), the United States' market-driven model, and China’s state-controlled, highly invested strategy. These comparisons reveal diverse priorities and suggest the need for a balanced, inclusive, and ethically grounded framework in integrating AI into both labor and education.

Finally, the article proposes a multidisciplinary, flexible, and experiential learning model, in which informatics and digital skills are not treated as standalone subjects, but as essential components of all areas of study. By combining humanities with technology and fostering creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability, schools can better prepare students for the uncertainties of the future labor market. The piece concludes by asserting that only through a deep and systemic transformation of education can we equip future generations with the tools needed to not just survive, but thrive, in a world where digital technologies are central to both work and life.
